AD says LGBT persons remain discriminated

-

The cohabitation law as proposed by the Nationalist government leaves much to be desired and retains certain forms of discrimination with respect to LGBT persons, Michael Briguglio, AD chairman said. Unfortunately, the Labour Party, which is depicting itself as the party for equal rights, agrees with certain forms of discrimination, such as its opposition to marriage rights and its opposition towards couples having the right to adopt.

With Alternattiva Demokratika one knows where one stands, and we are clear in our anti-discrimination position which ensures full equality in all social and family policies, he said.

Angele Deguara, AD spokesperson for social policy and civil rights, said: “AD believes that there should be full equality between same-sex couples and heterosexual couples in every aspect of life. Same-sex couples should have full marriage rights as enjoyed by heterosexual couples.”

Regarding adoption, AD believes that there should be no discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, including couples, and every case should be considered on its own merits in respect to the best interests of the child.

All civil legislation should prohibit any form of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. This is particularly pertinent in relation to the IVF bill also being currently debated in parliament which discriminates against lesbians who might require fertility treatment, she said.
