Balzan lead standings after easy win

Balzan lead the standings on maximum points from four games, while Rabat have only three points also from four games.

The game was totally dominated by Balzan as the score suggests.

Rabat created the first action when Jamie Muscat received the ball from a long drop-kick by keeper Jamie Azzopardi but his effort was cleared to a corner.

Balzan then mounted two actions. Andrea’ Sant was fouled on the right edge of the area and from Andrew Cassar’s free kick ,Sant headed out.

Gianfranco Micallef then served Sant with a through ball and Azzopardi had to come out of his charge to clear the ball away.

In a reaction by Rabat, Isaac Abela served Andre’ Bugeja with a square pass and Balzan keeper Mikhail Sciberras saved his effort from inside the area and Bugeja served Mario Spiteri from a short corner but the ball was cleared away following his shot.

Balzan regained the initiative as they created a further three actions. Dillon Darmanin dribbled past an opponent on the right flank and served Sant with a cross in the area but he miscued his shot and a good chance was lost.

Cassar served Sant in the area and the ball missed the upright by inches with Azzopardi beaten.

Cipriott then served the same player in the area and after Azzopardi partly saved his shot the ball was cleared away by a defender.

Three minutes before the break Balzan opened the score as Cipriott served Micallef with a perfect through ball in the area and he scored with a hard grounder past a helpless Azzopardi.

In the 56th minute Balzan doubled their lead when Sant released Micallef with a through ball in the area and he netted with a low diagonal shot.

The score became 3-0 in the 68th minute when Darmanin was fouled on the left flank and as substitute Nicolai Agius floated a high ball in the area from the free kick, Darmanin scored with a hard rising shot in the roof of the net.

Rabat tried to react but Sciberras saved Shawn Vassallo’s effort from outside the area with a fine diving save. Vassallo then served Mark Dalli in the area and the ball missed the bar by inches from his shot.

Balzan scored a fourth goal in the 75th minute as Christophe­r Mizzi served Sant in the area who scored with a hard low shot and in the second minute of added time the score became 5-0 with an identical move between the same two players. Referee: Martin Borg Player of the match: (Balzan Y)
