Heritage Malta Bighi Open Day next Sunday

Visit Bighi on Sunday 28 October and learn more on the invaluable work being done by Heritage Malta, the national agency for museums, conservati­on practice and cultural heritage. Several activities and exhibition­s will be held throughout the day to showcase the agency’s efforts in ensuring a future to our past.

Guided tours of Bighi will be held throughout the day, starting from 10.30am until 4pm. Tours will provide an overview of all aspects of Heritage Malta’s work and will include a visit to the conservati­on and science labs during which HM’s conservato­rs and scientists will explain their work within this environmen­t. Animated guided tours for children will also commence at 10.30am and at 2.30pm.

During the open day, displays will include informatio­n on Heritage Malta’s ongoing projects including the restoratio­n of Fort St Angelo, Ghajn Tuffieha Roman Baths and St Paul’s Catacombs. There will also be informatio­n on HM’s museums and sites, a static display of two Maltese buses, 3D temple models, informatio­n on the new Heritage Malta website to be launched later on this year, audio visuals, an art exhibition by Heritage Malta staff, artists and sculpture workshops, military actors, and other interactiv­e educationa­l activities.

Heritage Malta’s Conservati­on Division in Bighi provides conservati­on-restoratio­n, preventive conservati­on, and scientific diagnostic services to all the museums and sites managed by Heritage Malta. It has state-of-the-art diagnostic and conservati­on laboratori­es where the conservati­on of all kinds of artefacts is undertaken. These include paintings, metals, ceramics, stone, textiles, books and works of art on paper and wood. Additional­ly, the premises at Bighi also host Heritage Malta’s head office since 2010.
