DHL Malta takes part in Global Volunteer Day
Employees at DHL Express Malta joined thousands of employees worldwide at Deutsche Post DHL for Global Volunteer Day, an annual event held between 6 and 16 September.
The local initiative was twopronged: a group of female employees took 17 children, aged four to 12, from Angela House, Guardamangia, along with three Ursuline sisters and a facilitator, on a day out.
The day started with a tour of the Bird Park in Salina, followed by visits to McDonalds in Bugibba and Funland, where they experienced a 5D cinema.
While the children were out, some male employees of DHL Express went to Angela House and decorated the recreation hall and did some other maintenance work.
“The children had a great time and did not even notice the time passing,” commented Charles Schiavone, manager of DHL Express Malta. “Our thanks go to V. Spiteri & Sons, who offered free transport for this outing.
“This is not the first time we have organised such an event and the staff are encouraging me to hold another similar initiative soon and not wait for next year to come round to do some more needed work at Angela House.”
The Global Volunteer Day was first organised by DHL in 2011 when employees in 130 countries and territories worked on approximately 600 projects. DHL has a workforce of 470,000 people in more than 220 countries and territories.
“The volunteer work that our employees do throughout the year is quite impressive in itself. With the annual Global Volunteer Day, we can also produce a strong feeling of oneness and create additional motivation,” Christof Ehrhart, head of Corporate Communications and Responsibility at Deutsche Post DHL, said.
The projects cover a wide range of activities, including the remodelling of schools in South Africa, donation drives for the homeless in Russia, reading hours for children with impaired vision in India and the clean-up of nature reserves in Thailand.
