Nestlè tops list of global companies cutting carbon emissions

-

Nestlè International has topped the list of global companies cutting carbon emissions, having crafted some of the world’s smartest policies for improving energy use, according to an annual ranking released by the Carbon Disclosure Project.

The scorecard of Carbon Disclosure Project examined how companies incorporated climate change into their business plans, how they monitored emissions, their transperancy and actions taken to mitigate their impact.

“Since 2001, Nestlè halved the greenhouse gas emissions from the factories per tonne of product,” Nestlè Executive Vice President and Head of Operations Josè Lopez said.

“Nestlè is committed to reduce emissions from its operations even further by continuing to improve energy efficiency to switch to cleaner fuels and to invest in renewable sources,” he added.

For example, Nestlè is receiving 85 per cent of the total energy required by its factories from one of the largest wind farms in Mexico. It has reduced the amount of CO2 released in the atmosphere by more than 124,000 tonnes a year, the equivalent of taking 39,000 small cars off the road annually.

The Carbon Disclosure Project ranking was released during the same period that Nesatlè Malta announced that it has invested in a photovoltaic system that can generate over 115,000kWh per annum. The new system is designed to generate one-third of all the electricity requirements. The total generating power has an export potential of over €23,000 per year.

Naum Janakiev, Country Manager of Nestlé Malta said, “This would not only help our daily running costs, but will at the same time be contributing to lower our carbon footprint.”
