Bad planning

- Henry Calleja St Julian’s

Why can’t we do something wellplanned? We residents of the area next to your offices in Birkirkara Hill, St Julian’s, are having a nightmare with all the work being done in this road. Apart from the fact that it has already taken ages and is not yet half-way through, it has recently become even worse with the road being closed to two-way traffic from the petrol station downwards.

When you consider that more than a hundred cars, heavy vehicles and school buses use this road every minute, you can imagine what a hassle it is for us to reach Sliema.

Those in charge of the planning for this project decided to make a diversion by using the street parallel with Birkirkara Hill. But when you take this diversion you find yourself in a worse situation. Being a two-way street, it is impossible to drive down the whole street up to the Sacred Heart convent and school without meeting another vehicle coming from the opposite direction. With parked cars on both sides of the street, it is very difficult – if not impossible – to proceed. So, in order to avoid all this trouble, you have to go to St Julian’s to get to Sliema.

Last but not least, can someone explain why it is that the part of the road that has been trenched and covered with rubble has not been given a good layer of tarmac so that we will not continue to suffer any more damage to our cars?
