Malaysians arrest African romance scammer who conned Maltese woman

The Malaysian authorities last week arrested a 29-year-old Nigerian who had duped an undisclosed number of women into parting with their money in a textbook African romance scam, one of which was a Maltese woman.

Malaysian authorities say the scam, in total, was worth closed to €800,000.

The suspect admitted during interrogation to cheating six women including women from Malta, Germany, France and Canada.

"The suspect and his colleagues are believed to have been involved in the scam. One of the suspects is believed to have gone back to Nigeria but police are looking for others. The suspects are believed to have used the social media, especially using fake 'Facebook' accounts and pretending to be Americans to trap their victims," Kuala Lumpur police said in a statement.

"Money paid by the first victim from the United States went to Australia before it was sent to eight local accounts (in Malaysia)," the authorities said.

They added that the police also identified two Internet Protocol addresses involving Malaysian women who were cheated out of some €3,300 each.
