China speeds to gold in women’s team sprint, sets world record
Team China broke a world record during the first round of women’s team sprint and followed it up by defeating Russia in the gold medal matchup.
Gong Jinjie and Zhong Tianshi set the world record with a time of 31.928 seconds and will both take home gold. The Russian team of Daria Shmeleva and Anastasiia Voinova will take home the silver medal.
It was a rematch of the final head-to-head at the world championships. China was faster than Russia in that matchup, but due to an illegal change, they were disqualified and the Russians took home the title.
Reacting to the news, China's coach punched a wall and broke his hand. The Chinese were faster again in Rio, but this time their duo can return home with a gold medal. Team China was heavily favored going into the team sprint. Team Germany, Kristina Vogel and Miriam Welte, took home the bronze medal after defeating Team Australia by just .002 seconds.
“This is an historic medal. It is the first time. We have worked so hard for this. We are like old warriors who have kept fighting. This medal is not just for the two of us, because there are many people behind us who have worked very hard,” Zhong said.
