‘The Sound of Music’ at the Mediterranean Conference Centre

-

After the successful staging of the all-time family favourite musical, The Sound of Music, last October, which played to three sold-out houses, it will once again be produced at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta on 15 and 16 April.

This musical needs no introduction with Maltese audiences of all ages, with popular songs such as Do-Re-Mi, Edelweiss, My Favourite Things, Climb Every Mountain, The Lonely Goatherd and others.

The Sound of Music is a musical with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse. Set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss in 1938, the musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children and eventually their widowed father, Captain von Trapp. He is ordered to accept a commission in the German navy, but he opposes the Nazis. He and Maria decide on a plan to flee Austria with the children.

This production is being produced by Grapevine Music together with the Mediterranean Conference Centre. It is directed by Ray Mangion under the musical direction of Maestro Paul Abela and executive producer David Borg. There is a cast of around 50 singers and actors that include Dorothy Bezzina who will interpret the iconic role of Maria, Roger Tirazona as Captain Von Trapp, Stephania Grech as Mother Abbess, as well as Joseph Pavia, Nikki Farrugia, Ryan Paul Abela, Mariosa Pavia, Sarah Muscat, Michela Galea, Joe Tanti, Andrew Barberi, Stefan Scerri and Miriana Pavia, and two groups of children, ranging from the ages of six to 16, who will be playing the parts of the Von Trapp children. The musical will have a live orchestra composed of 23 musicians directed by maestro Abela. Performances will be held on Saturday, 15 April at 3pm and 8pm as well as Sunday, 16 April at 8pm. Ticket prices start from €20. Tickets can be bought online from http://www.showshappening.com or from the Booking Office of the Mediterranean Conference Centre on 2559 5750.
