French senator Legendre’s lecture on the French language in Europe
Senator Jacques Legendre will be giving a lecture on Le français peut-il être la langue de l’Europe? on Thursday, 23 March at 7pm at Palazzo de Piro, Mdina.
In conjunction with the Semaine de la Francophonie, the Alliance française de Malte-Méditerranée is organising a lecture by Senator Legendre who will delve into the changing use of French from its more traditional role as the language of diplomacy right up to the present day when this Romance Language has undergone various symbolic permutations. In a Europe that is constantly changing and which has yet to find a true common identity, against a background of too many tumultuous events, can the French language yet be a path for emboldened and open communication?
A French politician and Professor of History, former Minister Senator Legendre is president of the Political Affairs Commission of the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie. He is a member of the Commission of Foreign Affairs for Defence and the Armed Forces and a Councillor of Cambrai. He has represented the Senate at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe where he chaired the Com- missions for Culture, Education and Communication 2005-2008. He has recently been re-elected Senate representative of APCE and member of the Commission that ensures the honouring of obligations and commitments by member states for the Council of Europe (Monitoring Committee).
Furthermore, at the Senate, he has presided a Working Group on the Migrants’ Crises as well as an Information Mission regarding the March 2015 Agreement between the EU and Turkey on the Refugee Crisis. He is also president of the French National Commission for Cultural Encounter Centres.
