Another gold medal for Charlotte Wingfield and Malta

The fifth and final day (yesterday) at the San Marino Games provided more satisfacti­on for some of the Maltese athletes.

The best result was obtained by athlete Charlotte Wingfield who won the 200m. It was her second and Malta’s fourth gold medal at these Games.

In the process, she also establishe­d a new national record as she clocked 23.78 seconds.

These results and successes confirm her as the queen of local athletics.

Wingfeld later went on to add another medal to her tally as she led the Malta women’s relay team to a silver medal in the women’s relay event.

The other members of the team were Rachel Fitz, Sarah Busuttil and Annalise Vassallo.

Another bronze medal was won by Rebecca Sare, who finished third in the women’s triple jump. Earlier in the week, she had also claimed bronze in the women’s long jump to return home with two medals.

Also yesterday, a bronze medal was won by Ian Paul Grech in the men’s triple jump.

Bozidar Dimitrov won the bronze medal for Malta at The GSSE San Marino 2017 in the Skeet event yesterday.

Clive Farrugia managed to qualify for the finals but finished 5th overall.

Dimitrov registered scores of 20, 21, 21, 25 and 23 for a total of 110/125. Then he had a score of 40 in the final finishing with an overall score of 150 in third place.

Farrugia registered scores of 23, 21, 23, 23 and 22 for a total of 112 to start the final round in third place, two more than Dimitrov. But in the final, he scored 34 to finished on 136 and fifth overall.

This was the 4th medal for the Maltese shooters this week in San Marino.

Earlier, Gianluca Chetcuti won gold in Double Trap, Frans Pace won silver in Trap and Eleanor Bezzina also won a silver in 10m Air Pistol.

Malta finished with a total haul of 29 medals - four gold, nine silver and 16 bronze.

The Maltese contingent is expected back in Malta today at 11.30pm.

The next edition of the Games will be held in Montenegro in 2019. The Games flag was handed over yesterday evening during the Closing Ceremony.
