Qaħba Jien?

It’s not that common to have a monologue performed locally by a female. Only a very few cases come to mind. Qaħba Jien? is a monologue to be staged at St James Cavalier this coming November. The actress Sarah Camilleri, known for theatre and television drama such as Deċeduti, Iċ-Ċaqqufa, Vittmi, Division 7 and Tereża, believes this is one of the main challenges in her career.

Qaħba Jien? features a woman, gifted by nature, and known by everyone as the “whore”. Everyone has his own version why she is known that way. The men put on a macho act, boasting about what they did and didn’t do with her, even those who she doesn’t even know of. On the other hand, ladies are jealous of her, and are very fond of being jealous of her! They see her garnering more attention than they could ever do.

Being called a “whore” is not a joke. Have you ever met someone known as a whore? Have you ever been called so yourself? Or have you ever called someone else a “whore”? Before uttering the word, have you ever tried to walk in her shoes? Have you ever tried walking in a street where everyone looks your way and whispers negative comments about you? Have you ever listened to a whore’s story? Who will cast the first stone?

The story kicks off in the 80s… a story of a normal family with all its ups and downs. But doubts, abuses and bullying turn everything upside down. Gossip makes things worse and only one way forward seems possible. At one moment, everything appears to start getting better, until…

Qaħba Jien? reflects the feelings of persons with no voice in society. It creates a silent dialogue with the audience, echoing different episodes in everyone’s life. Well known actor Mario Micallef will be directing this monologue. He has a vast experience in one-man shows as he is the actor who did the most monologues in Malta.

Joe Julian Farrugia wrote and is producing this show. He is well known in song writing, television and theatre drama and biographical productions.

Qaħba Jien? is a collaboration with Valletta18 and is part of the Spazju Kreattiv programme. It will be staged on 3, 4 and 5 November at the St. James Cavalier Theatre as its size provides the perfect environment for such a performance.
