No two weights and two measures when it comes to truth and justice - PD

-

Partit Demokratiku insisted yesterday that there can be no two weights and two measures when it comes to truth and justice.

The party was referring to the publication of the Egrant inquiry conclusions, noting that “the government’s aggressive attitude towards politicians and/or journalists is further threatening people’s freedom of speech”.

The party added: “Since the Attorney General has chosen not to publish the entire report, and the Prime Minister has said that he will, it is being whispered that Castile will be publishing a redacted report. This would still be totally unacceptable and would further fuel speculation that the report actually contains information that is detrimental to the Prime Minister or to people he is protecting.”

PD said that the timing and decision of the Attorney General to appeal the Constitutional Court’s order for the recusal of Mr Justice Antonio Mizzi from deciding on an inquiry requested by former Opposition leader Simon Busuttil on the Panama Papers revelations “is another cause for alarm, and further erodes trust in our institutions.

“It is now more unacceptable than ever before that the government is trying to prevent an independent inquiry from taking place into other corruption scandals via its appeal against an inquiry into the Panama Papers.”

The PD challenged the government, saying that if it is “truly is concerned about truth, then it must allow an independent investigation into the Panama Papers to go ahead.

“The government’s representatives must be ready to answer for their own potential crimes. Instead, it is preparing to crack down on the Opposition in a country still asking many questions and seeking many answers, in the wake of an assassinated journalist and countless other scandals unrelated to Egrant.”
