Turkish company to begin final phase of Marsa Junction Project in coming weeks

- Julian Bonnici

Turkish road-construction company Ayhanlar Yol Asfaltlama is planning to begin work on the final phase of the Marsa Junction Project in the coming weeks, The Malta Independent on Sunday has been informed.

The work will see the building of seven large flyover structures and is expected to take until the end of 2020.

Ayhanlar Yol Asfaltlama was awarded the circa €38 million contract earlier this year, following an international call for tenders. In May, one of the Maltese consortia that had submitted a more expensive offer for the contract filed an appeal to contest the selection of Ayhanlar. However, all the Maltese consortia’s arguments against the Turkish international company were rejected by the Public Contracts Review Board.

The government, through other companies engaged in contracts, begun preparatory work on the first two phases towards the end of last year. This involved the demolition of two old factories, the rebuilding of Triq il-Gvern Lokali, the construction of new lanes at Triq Aldo Moro and various other work related to the relocation and upgrading of underground networks for water, wastewater, electricity and telecommunications.

Established in 1978, Ayhanlar is a renowned road and building construction company with several major projects in its portfolio, including airport runways, highways, factory buildings and shopping malls.

In 2003, it was entrusted with the development of the renowned Intercity Istanbul Park racetrack, site of the Istanbul race in the Formula 1 Grand Prix series between 2005 and 2011.

The company has an extensive fleet of road construction machinery, some of which will be brought to Malta for this project. It is ISO 9001-certified for its top quality management standards, and its environmental management systems are ISO 14001-certified as well, denoting excellence in its effort to constantly reduce the negative environmental impact of its operations.
