Church opens hostels to help Gozitan youths studying in Malta
The Gozo diocese has invested in two youth hostels for use by Gozitan students studying at ter- tiary level in Malta.
In a letter to the parish priests, rectors and religions superiors, Gozo Bishop Mario Grech said many Gozitan youths study in Mata but this presents a number of challenges, including the high rent prices.
Moreover, the living conditions are sometimes sub-standard, despite the high rent prices.
In the letter, the Gozo Bishop said he knows of youths who had to abandon their studies because their parents could not cope with the high rent prices, which are constantly increasing.
Mgr Grech said he started thinking about finding a solution some months ago.
He said he had found the cooperation of the Augustinian priests and the Sisters of St Joseph, who lent the diocese two houses – one in Gwardamangia and another in Gzira. The first one will be for men, the second for women.
The diocese invested a considerable sum to renovate the properties and turn them into hostels. “We did this with the conviction that this was an investment that befits our youths,” the Bishop wrote.
Those who are interested in making use of the hostels should write to the Administrative Secretary of the diocese. All requests will be evaluated before a specially appointed board.
Everyone can apply but preference will be given to those who truly need assistance.
Since the project is subsidised by the diocese and the two religious orders, a nominal fee will be requested.
