Leon Goretzka leads Bayern Munich to 3-0 win at Stuttgart

-

Leon Goretzka scored his first goal for Bayern Munich and set up another to lead the defending champions to a 3-0 win at Stuttgart in the Bundesliga yesterday.

Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Mueller also scored and set up goals as Bayern delivered a statement of intent with a cohesive and committed performance to end Stuttgart coach Tayfun Korkut’s seven-game unbeaten run at home.

Korkut’s side did well until Mueller set up Goretzka to break the deadlock minutes before the break. The former Schalke midfielder stopped the ball with his left boot and dispatched it with his right past Ron-Robert Zieler inside the far post.

In the second half, Goretzka set up Lewandowski, who took his tally to two goals in two games before setting up Mueller with his heel.

Unhappy goalkeepers

Milot Rashica scored from a brilliant free kick in injury time for Werder Bremen to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 and ruin Kevin Trapp’s return.

Rashica took responsibility after earning the free kick about 25 meters from goal, and he whipped it over the Frankfurt wall and inside the left post to leave Trapp flailing.

The Germany goalkeeper rejoined Frankfurt from Paris SaintGermain the day before, returning on loan for the season due to Danish goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow’s knee problems.

Frankfurt played most of the game with 10 players after Jetro Willems struck Bremen's Theodor Gebre Selassie in the face after half an hour played.

Yuya Osako already put Bremen ahead, though the video assistant referee was called into action once again after his goal was flagged offside. TV replays showed the Japan striker was onside, however, and the VAR eventually gave the go-ahead for his celebrations to resume. It wasn't a game for goalkeepers. Bremen's Jiri Pavlenka was stretchered off the pitch in the second half after bringing down Mijat Gacinovic, giving away a penalty and injuring himself in the process.

Then the 18-year-old Luca Plogmann's first action on his Bundesliga debut was to pick the ball from the inside of his net after Sebastien Haller beat him from the spot to equalize.

Atletico loses first match of season 2-0 at Celta

Atletico Madrid lost its first match of the season after going 2-0 down at Celta Vigo with 10 men in the Spanish league yesterday.

The defeat would have been worse if not for the video assistant referee waiving off a third goal that was initially awarded on the pitch.

Uruguay striker Maxi Gomez scored Celta’s opener seconds after halftime and set up Iago Aspas for a second goal in the 52nd minute.

Defender Stefan Savic was sent off for the final 20 minutes when he received a second yellow card for dangerously lifting his studs near the face of Aspas while disputing the ball.

Nainggolan's goal on debut paves way for Inter's first win

When Radja Nainggolan signed with Inter Milan in June, coach Luciano Spalletti said he would give the underachieving squad the “boost” it needed.

The Belgian midfielder fulfilled Spalletti’s wishes in Inter’s 3-0 win at Bologna yesterday, scoring the opener on debut to send the Nerazzurri on their way to their first Serie A victory of the season.

With Inter having lost at Sassuolo and drawn with Torino at home in its opening two matches, it was looking like another disappointing result until Nainggolan scored in the 66th minute.

Using his left foot to control a pass from Matteo Politano, Nainggolan unleashed a powerful shot with his right foot into the far bottom corner from the centre of the area.

Substitute Antonio Candreva added another by finishing off a counterattack following a pass from Ivan Perisic.

Perisic then found the target himself three minutes later, faking out a defender by pretending to shoot with his left foot then firing in with his right boot.

Juventus made to fight hard by Parma

Juventus had to fight harder than expected to beat a stubborn and lively Parma side 2-1.

The Italian champions took an early 2nd minute lead through Mandzukic, but failed to build on it and newly promoted Parma hit back to equalise through Gervinho on 33 minutes.

Matuidi put Juventus ahead once again in the 58th minute.

Parma tried to react but Juventus remained in command even if Ronaldo again failed to score – his third match for Juve without a goal.

Mbappe scores and gets sent off as PSG wins 4-2 at Nimes

Kylian Mbappe scored a brilliant late goal and got sent off right at the end of a pulsating 42 win at Nimes in the French league yesterday.

Two weeks after coming off the bench to score twice against Guingamp, he bailed out PSG with an unstoppable 77thminute strike to make it 3-2 after Nimes clawed back from 2-0 down and then hit the crossbar.

Striker Edinson Cavani added a fourth in injury time after being set up by winger Angel Di Maria, who earlier scored direct from a corner.

Earlier, Di Maria and Neymar had shot PSG 2-0 ahead. But Bobichon first reduced the arrears and then Savanier equalized from the spot-kick following a VAR decision. Friday Yesterday Today
