Freeeport makes Birzebbuga Day Centre free transport service for elderly possible

-

The Day Care Centre for the elderly in Birzebbuga has introduced a free transport service aimed at improving the quality of life of senior citizens in the village.

Birzebbuga Mayor Joseph Farrugia said the new service would enable elderly residents to socialise more frequently and also go on a monthly cultural outing.

Farrugia said: “Our senior citizens will benefit enormously from this service, which has been made possible thanks to the financial assistance we have received from Malta Freeport Terminals and the Malta Freeport Corporation. On behalf of residents, I would like to thank these two entities for their support.”

Malta Freeport Terminals CEO Alex Montebello, who presented the mayor with a sponsorship cheque at the official launch of the service, said: “We are proud to form part of the Birzebugga community and delighted to support initiatives that improve residents’ lives. I’m sure the free transport service being offered by the council to the elderly population will go some way to achieve this.”

The event was also attended by the Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing, Anthony Agius Decelis, who thanked Malta Freeport Terminals for its support and said iniatives of this nature encouraged the elderly to lead more active lives as well as participating in the community.

Malta Freeport Terminals has supported a number of new projects in the village in recent months, funding the creation of a garden and recreational facility on the Birzebbuga promenade – which will see the transformation of a stretch of land covering 5,000 square metres along the promenade into a garden with water features – as well as sponsoring local sports clubs and entities.

The CEO of Malta Freeport Corporation, David Magro, was also present for the launch of the free transport service.
