Muscat’s tarnished reputation
Who should look into the serious concerns raised by the Venice Commission on MPs’ ability to scrutinize the government while, at the same time, they hold guaranteed positions on public bodies? Perhaps the new Commissioner for Standards in Public Life? The Ombudsman?
A few weeks ago, Dr Hyzler insisted that he would be looking into this matter. By all means, it is a very urgent matter indeed...
Unfortunately, Joseph Muscat’s image abroad has been tarnished by allegations of corruption, lack of good governance and the cruel murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia which is still unsolved. Joseph Muscat & Co.‘s promise to uphold standards of integrity, honesty, transparency, accountability and a sense of justice, has failed abysmally ever since the Labour Party was swept to power.
The Panama Papers have done considerable damage to our reputation in the eyes of other countries because the Maltese government decided not to take serious action against the Prime Minister’s favourite minister Mizzi and chief of staff Keith Schembri, while the implicated prime minister of Iceland and the Spanish industry minister had to resign.
How and why did Joseph Muscat come to all this? Pity really, because Joseph Muscat is young, smart and intelligent and can do a lot of good things as president of the European Union...but alas, his reputation is already tarnished... Jos Edmond Zarb
