Atalanta moves to 3rd in Serie A after beating Genoa 2-1

-

Atalanta kept alive its dream of qualifying for the Champions League for the first time by beating relegation-threatened Genoa 2-1 in Serie A yesterday.

Halftime substitute Musa Barrow scored seconds after the interval and Timothy Castagne doubled Atalanta’s lead in the 53rd minute as the team stretched its unbeaten streak to 11 matches and moved to third in Serie A.

Goran Pandev netted a consolation for Genoa a minute from time.

Atalanta moved two points above fourth-placed Inter Milan, which hosts already-relegated Chievo Verona tomorrow.

The top four from Serie A qualify for the Champions League. AC Milan and Roma are four points below Inter. There are two rounds remaining after this weekend.

Genoa remained four points above the relegation zone.

Luis Alberto and Joaquin Correa gave Lazio a much-needed 2-1 victory away to Cagliari yesterday, keeping them in the hunt for Europa League places.

Felipe Caicedo completed a give-and-go with Joaquin Correa to spring the offside trap and draw Alessio Cragno out, but slightly over-hit the lob.

Alberto gave the Roman side the lead in the 31st minute.

They doubled their lead in the 53rd minute with a classic counter-attack. Alberto threaded through to release Correa who scored his first Serie A goal since November.

Cagliari pulled back a goal on 90 minutes through Pavoletti, but it was not enough to save them a point.

In the other match, AC Milan kept their hopes of finishing 4th alive as they overcame Fiorentina 1-0.

A goal by Hakan Calhanoglu on the 35th minute proved to be the winner.

The three points enabled Milan to remain 5th on 62 points, three behind Atalanta and one behind city rivals Inter who will be in action tomorrow.
