Msida to get two flyovers as part of Msida Creek Project

-

Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg yesterday announced a new major project in Msida, The Msida Creek Project, which will introduce two 175-metre-long flyovers instead of the traffic lights junction connecting Triq Marina, Triq il-Wied tal-Imsida and Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli, a junction which sees more than 4,500 vehicles an hour.

“This is a government that is committed to working towards safer roads, more efficient roads, less congestion and a quality of life that is always getting better,” Minister Borg said. “Today we are in a locality which is central not only on the map of Malta, but also because of its strategic importance as a connection and as a commercial and touristic centre. Once again, we have another essential project for the challenges of traffic and congestion in this locality, a project that will also be reducing the risk of accidents and improving air quality.”

Minister Borg explained that thanks to this new intersection on a separate level, the efficiency and capacity of this important junction would increase, while other connections in the area would also be upgraded, such as that between Ta’ Xbiex and Triq il-Marina. He added that the

project would also improve the area, with an open recreational space near the Workers Memorial, pedestrian facilities including two safer pedestrian bridges instead of the existing pelican crossings, and 100 new parking spaces.

“From my end, I feel that we

will be giving the people a muchdesired project, which will mitigate a great inconvenience for residents and businesses, which will improve the flow of public transport, and which will facilitate the lives of many students using this road. This is another project for the quality of life of people, another solution by this government, a project that will continue connecting a chain of investment that does not look at north, south and centre, but which connects the country. The government wants to build on every investment so that the people continue to benefit. This is a government committed to listening to the priorities of the people and working holistically to implement its vision.”

The minister said that several discussions were underway with stakeholders, including the local council, so that plans can then be finalised, with the application for permits submitted to the Planning Authority over the coming weeks.
