The summer championship comes to an end this evening as the local horse racing season breaks off for the summer break.

Seven finals are on the card for which the prize money is once again being sponsored by the Marsa Race Track Limited (MRTL) consortium which has been approved by the Maltese Parliament to develop and maintain the racetrack for a leasing period of 65 years and an investment of €28 million.

The total prize money for the seven finals is the same as last year’s and amounts to over €10,000. This championship is totally different than those raced during the rest of the season as each horse can participate in a maximum of three races alternating between the 2,140m and 2,640m distances.

Horses gain points according to their order of finish with the 12 horses in each category that have accumulated the most points gaining the right to take part in the finals. Once again this year the finals will be disputed over the long distance of 2,640m.

The programme kicks off at 7pm with the Premier category final being the 6th one of the day. Also on the card two small pony trotting races driven by students of the horse racing academy.

All the children/youths that participated in this year’s academy will be given a certificate of attendance by the Malta Racing Club Chairman, Edwin Borg.

The trophies in the finals will be given out by the MRTL consortium representatives Philip Mossman and Johann Farrugia.
