Traditional Maltese crib goes to Vienna
Following the presentation of the traditional Maltese crib in recent years in a number of prominent places, including the Vatican and Manger Square in Bethlehem, this year the traditional Maltese Crib will be on display in the Austrian capital of Vienna.
The Ministry for Culture has been making preparations in collaboration with the Maltese embassy in Vienna and the MTA office in Austria to present this traditional part of Maltese culture in one of the most visited Christmas villages in Europe.
The setting of the crib represents a traditional Maltese nativity scene with life-size figures hand-crafted by Gozitan artist Manwel Grech. The crib’s structure has been adjusted to fit its surroundings and was designed and manufactured by Jennings Falzon and Norman Hill under the direction of the Culture Directorate.
The official inauguration took place on Friday evening in the presence of President George Vella and his wife. Also present for the inauguration were Culture Minister Owen Bonnici and Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig.
The crib is an opportunity to promote Maltese culture and traditions overseas while people are celebrating festive season. It is also an opportunity to promote Malta as a cultural destination, attracting tourists interested in various aspects of arts and culture.
During the official inauguration, KorMalta — the national choir — performed a musical programme which included traditional Maltese carols.
The crib will be on display at the Vienna University Campus between 14 November and 22 December.
