MIDI plc, in collaboration with the Sliema Local Council, has embarked on a project to refurbish the playground located within the George Bonello Du Puis gardens at Qui-Si-Sana. The first phase of the refurbishment project commenced during September and was completed this week. The second phase will be undertaken next year.

The agreement concluded with the Sliema Local Council provides that MIDI will invest €230,000 to refurbish the playground as part of the Planning Authority’s planning gain obligation for the development of the final phase of Tigne Point. The Sliema Local Council will also be making and additional contribution towards the finalization of this project.

The works include replacement of the protective rubber flooring and the replacement of the playground equipment to provide five distinct play areas for children between the ages of 3 and 12 years, the installation of fencing to secure the playground as well as upgrading the electrical infrastructure including the installation of LED lighting and planting of additional trees to provide better shading. On completing of the works relating to the final phase of Tigne Point the QuisSi-Sana seafront will be connected to the Pjazza Tigne with access to the Garden Battery which is being developed into a 7,000sqm landscaped plaza for the benefit of the general public.

During a site visit to inspect the works in progress MIDI CEO, Mark Portelli said that “it is a pleasure to work on this community project with the Sliema local Council. The sponsorship of this playground forms part of our commitment to support community projects in localities, where we have development interests. Now that the Tigne Point development is close the completion, we look forward to creating new pedestrian links connecting Qui-Si-Sana to the Garden Battery, Censu Xerri Street and PjazzaTigne.”

Whilst thanking MIDI for their sponsorship, Sliema mayor Anthony Chircop said that “the works the first phase which includes the refurbishment of the two largest areas in the playground has now been completed providing new equipment for the safe enjoyment of children who frequent this playground. Early next year we hope to start works on the remaining play areas so that the playground is completely refurbished by summer.”
