Mendy, Gabriel Jesus give leader Man City win at Leicester

-

When even Benjamin Mendy is scoring, it's a sign of just how well the quadruple chase is going for Manchester City.

With the international break over, the runaway leaders started the Premier League title run-in with a 2-0 victory over Leicester, started by Mendy breaking the deadlock on Saturday.

After Riyad Mahrez's shot was punched clear by Kasper Schmeichel, Mendy eventually received the ball to curl in a low shot past the Leicester goalkeeper in the 58th minute.

After not scoring in his opening 39 league games for City, the left back now has two in his last six as Pep Guardiola's side closes in on a third title in four seasons.

There was a more familiar name on the score sheet for the second in the 74th minute and a familiar creator of the goal.

After a precision throughball from Kevin De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus passed to Raheeem Sterling, who returned the ball for the forward to finish rather than shooting himself. In the week when City looked to the future with Sergio Aguero's end-ofseason departure announced, this was a fourth goal in as many league games for Gabriel Jesus.

And it helped City move 17 points ahead of Manchester United with seven games remaining, albeit United having played two fewer games than its neighbor.

Leicester missed a chance to dislodge United from second but was helped out by fourth-place Chelsea losing to West Bromwich Albion as the 2016 champions pursue qualification for the

Champions League for the first time since then.

Thiago Silva sent off as Chelsea slumps 5-2 vs West Brom

Struggling West Bromwich Albion caused a big Premier League shock on Saturday by winning 5-2 at fourth-place Chelsea after the home team had Thiago Silva sent off in the first half at Stamford Bridge.

The experienced Brazilian defender Silva was back in the side, following an injury absence, for the first time in 10 matches but was shown the red card in the 29th minute following two bookings. It was German coach Thomas Tuchel's first defeat at Chelsea and came in his 15th game in charge.

USA striker Christian Pulisic picked up his first Chelsea goal since Dec. 5 to put his team in front in the 27th minute, only to see Matheus Pereira strike twice in two minutes in first-half stoppage time to give second-bottom West Bromwich, which almost needs a miracle to avoid relegation, a 2-1 lead at the interval.

Callum Robinson grabbed a third goal for West Bromwich when he swept home a cross from Darnell Furlong in the 63rd minute.

Mason Mount tapped in from close range after good work by Timo Werner to give hope to Chelsea, which meets Porto in a Champions League quarter-final first leg in Seville on Wednesday.

But Mbaye Diagne drilled in a low shot to put West Bromwich 4-2 up and Robinson clipped the ball over goalkeeper Edouard

Mendy to complete a surprise scoreline in the closing stages.

"It was a tough first half for us," Pulisic said. "We made some simple mistakes we don't normally make. The red card changes everything. To give them credit, they played their attacks really well. It's no time to panic. We've been in good form and lost one game."

For West Bromwich, it was the team's first win at Stamford Bridge since 1978. "Our goals were all quality goals, not just the finishing but the build-ups," manager Sam Allardyce said. "It's just a bit of a shame we didn't show this quality in some other games.

Leeds sends Sheffield United closer to drop with 2-1 win

Phil Jagielka's own-goal gave Leeds a 2-1 win over Sheffield United, consigning the last-place team to a 24th Premier League defeat of the season on Saturday.

Jagielka turned the ball past his own goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale four minutes into the second half after Ben Osborn had canceled out Jack Harrison's early opener for Leeds.

Leeds passed the 40-point mark with the 13th win of its first season back in the Premier League after 16 years, moving into 10th place.

Ramsdale was helpless when Raphinha's ball in across the face of goal to the far post picked out Harrison, who tapped Leeds into a deserved 12th-minute lead.

When it seemed Leeds would have to settle for a 1-0 lead at the interval, the visitors struck in first-half stoppage time.
