On 12 May, Optimist Club of Malta once again launched their educational initiative Ikber Magħna, this time in Msida, with the collaboration of the Msida Local Council. Ikber Magħna was launched with the aim to assist those children within local communities who need help with their homework and studies after school hours. Educational extra-curriculum activities and a number of talks are also an integral part of the project, encouraging these youngsters to flourish beyond school hours and provide them with valuable characterbuilding experiences, which will help them well into the future.

Present for this occasion was Reuben Buttigieg, Optimist Club of Malta president; Margaret Baldacchino Cefai, mayor of Msida; Alan Vella, Msida Local Council executive secretary, and Silvana Ungaro, Msida Primary School head teacher, as well as a number of members from both the Msida Local Council and Optimist Club of Malta.

In his address for the occasion, Buttigieg thanked the mayor for the immediate response when Optimist reached out to enquire whether this project would be of interest, as well as the subsequent support offered. Buttigieg reiterated his conviction that demand for this project by residents of the locality, who have school age children, will be huge, as the population of Msida has grown exponentially in the past years. He also explained the idea behind this project, which has now launched in a third locality.

The mayor also thanked Optimist for reaching out and for choosing Msida to launch such a valuable project. Baldacchino Cefai said that in the past the Local Council also held a similar initiative, which unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

During this event, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Optimist Club of Malta and the Msida Local Council.

The residents of Msida, who are interested in sending their children to the Ikber Magħna project, can either contact the Local Council directly or call on 7909 3467.

The Ikber Magħna project started in Msida last Thursday, 19 May and will be held every Monday and Friday from 2.30 to 4.30pm
