Rampant Liverpool scores 9, Haaland nets hat trick for City

-

After a winless start to the season and a dispiriting loss to its archrival, Liverpool needed to make a statement against Bournemouth on Saturday.

A 9-0 win, equaling the record for the biggest ever victory in the English Premier League, sends a loud message indeed.

Liverpool blew away Bournemouth at Anfield to put its early season struggles behind it, with Roberto Firmino scoring two goals and setting up three more.

After opening the campaign with two draws and a loss, it was the kind of performance that will erase many of the questions about whether Jurgen Klopp's team had lost its edge.

Manchester City also showed that it can never be counted out after the defending champion found itself trailing by two goals for the second straight game. Erling Haaland netted a second half hat trick as City rallied to beat Crystal Palace 4-2 at home — having managed to salvage only a 3-3 draw at Newcastle last weekend.

Manchester United and Chelsea also won on a good day for the traditional powers.

United made it back-to-back wins in the league for the first time since February by beating Southampton 1-0 away thanks to a second-half goal by Bruno Fernandes.

Chelsea overcame the early sending off of Conor Gallagher to beat Leicester 2-1 at Stamford Bridge behind two goals from Raheem Sterling.

Also, Brighton beat Leeds 1-0 and Brentford drew at home against Everton 1-1.

Man City is making a habit of digging itself out of holes.

Pep Guardiola's team has fallen two goals behind in four of its last six league games, but has not lost any of them.

This time City trailed 2-0 after just 21 minutes against a clinical Palace side after an own-goal by John Stones and a header by Joachim Andersen.

After Bernardo Silva pulled one back eight minutes into the second half, Haaland took over with three goals in the space of 20 minutes to take his tally to six in his first four league appearances.

Dybala helps Roma to 1-1 draw on his return to Juventus

Roma forward Paulo Dybala returned to Juventus and helped in the equalizer as José Mourinho's side lost its perfect start to Serie A on Saturday.

Dušan Vlahović scored after just 76 seconds and Juventus appeared to be in firm control until Tammy Abraham's 69th-minute leveller.

The 1-1 draw marked Roma's first dropped points after opening the season with two wins. Napoli, which plays at Fiorentina on Sunday, is the only team left in Serie A with a perfect record.

It was an emotional return for Dybala, who cried at his final home match for Juventus in May.

Dybala spent seven years at Juventus, scoring 115 goals and helping the Bianconeri to 12 trophies, including five Serie A titles.

But the often-injured Argentina forward fell out of favor under coach Massimiliano Allegri after Juventus signed Vlahović in January. He left the Turin club when his contract ran out, joining Roma in July.

Dybala was applauded by the Juventus fans when his name was read out during the warmup, and they implored him just before kickoff to give them a wave, which he did. He was also applauded off when he was substituted in the 77th minute. He's still in search of his first goal for his new club.

Juventus was looking for a reaction after a drab 0-0 draw at Sampdoria on Monday and it immediately got it when Vlahović curled a free kick off the underside of the bar and into the top near corner with his first touch of the ball.

The Bianconeri were dominating and forced Roma goalkeeper Rui Patrício into two fantastic saves in the following 15 minutes.

They thought they doubled their lead in the 26th but Manuel Locatelli's goal was ruled out because of a Vlahović handball.

Vlahović also had chances to double his tally shortly before halftime with two free kicks from similar distance to the one he scored from, but one attempt was saved and the other flew narrowly over the bar.

Roma finally began to get into the match in the second half and levelled when Dybala acrobatically volleyed a corner back across goal for Abraham to head into the center of the net.

The visitors almost snatched a late winner late following another corner but Juventus new signing Arkadiusz Milik cleared the shot off the line.

Cremonese lost at home to Torino 2-1 to leave it still looking for its first points in its first season back in the top-flight since 1996.

It is unlikely to find much joy in its next match either as it travels to Inter Milan.

Defending Serie A champion AC Milan hosted Bologna late Saturday.

Modeste off the mark for Dortmund in 1-0 win at Hertha

Anthony Modeste's first goal for Borussia Dortmund was enough to edge Hertha Berlin 1-0 in the Bundesliga, where Union Berlin was the big winner on Saturday.

Hertha's city rival enjoyed a 6-1 success at Schalke to go provisionally top of the table before Bayern Munich hosted Borussia Mönchengladbach later.

Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel played a key role in his team's third win from four games, though it won't erase memories of last weekend's 3-2 home loss to Werder Bremen, when Dortmund became the first in the league to concede three goals after the 88th minute.

Modeste scored in the 32nd against Hertha, producing a brilliant header to meet former Cologne teammate Salih Özcan's cross. Turkey midfielder Özcan was making his Dortmund debut following his transfer between the sides.

Karim Adeyemi also started for Dortmund after two games out with a toe injury in his left foot, but there was no place in the squad for Gio Reyna – one week after he played against Bremen for his first competitive appearance since April 8, when he reinjured his right hamstring. Dortmund didn't elaborate.

After scoring, Modeste ran to embrace coach Edin Terzić, and his celebrations belied the pressure he'd been under since he joined from Cologne.

The Dortmund fans were celebrating again early in the second half when news came through of another Union Berlin goal at their bitter rival Schalke.

Jude Bellingham missed several chances to kill the game for Dortmund before Marco Richter struck the crossbar on his comeback for Hertha. The outstanding Kobel got his fingertips to the ball. Richter was making his first appearance since undergoing treatment for a testicular tumor.
