Hard‑fought win for Spartans

- SIMON FARRUGIA

A solitary goal scored deep into first half stoppage time was what proved to be the winner for Ħamrun Spartans against Gżira United. It was a stern test for the Spartans who found in the Maroons a stubborn side ready to fight till the end of the match.

This results means that Ħamrun Spartans remain just two points adrift of leaders Flo‐ riana, whereas for Gżira United they are still not mathemati‐ cally safe though the prospects look positive.

On 14 minutes came Ħamrun’s first chance when Ryan Camen‐ zuli set league top scorer Luke Montebello but the Spartans striker shot was held by the crossbar. Fortunately for Gżira United the ball was clear to safety.

Being a tight match for long stretches play was restricted to the midfield sector. In fact it was only two minutes from the break when Gżira United went near for the first time. Zachary Scerri found Gabriel Bohrer who was unlucky in seeing his shot hit the woodwork.

This was the best patch for Gżira who went near a minute later through an Andrew Borg shot which just missed the tar‐ get.

But deep into first half stop‐

page time and against the run of play Ħamrun Spartans went into the lead. A goal which proved to be the winner. A Juan Carlos Corbalan cross from the right side found Roko Prsa who headed home from close range.

Ten minutes into the second half Luke Montebello play the ball towards Jonny Do Nasci‐ mento but the latters shot failed to find the net. And on 69 min‐

utes Ħamrun Spartans were dealt a severe blow when Emer‐ son Marcelina was sent off fol‐ lowing a second bookable offence.

The Spartans had to dig deep with Gżira United throwing all personnel on the offensive. Though there were some close shaves, Ħamrun held high and gained a hard fought but pre‐ cious win.
