15 Tuesdays in honour of St Dominic
Appreciations
Since 1233 the Order of Preachers has honoured St Dominic especially on Tuesdays, the day of the week of the translation of his body to Bologna.
In 1239 and 1272, directives went out to the Order for Tuesdays to be consecrated to St Dominic. Thus came the beginnings of the practice of the 15 Tuesdays preceding his feast.
The Dominican community of Valletta will celebrate the first Tuesday dedicated to St Dominic on Tuesday, April 25. Rosary will be said at 5.45pm, followed by Sung Mass with homily by Fr Provincial Vincent Micallef, OP, at 6.15pm. After Mass, there will be prayers to St Dominic, the singing of the antiphon Pie Pater and Eucharistic Benediction.
The last Tuesday event will be held on August 1, followed by the feast of St Dominic in Valletta on Sunday, August 6.
Maria Portelli passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on March 17. For over half a century, her confectionery in Savina Square, Victoria has attracted and been frequented by many local and foreign customers.
There is no doubt they all were satisfied, not only with the variety of delicious sweets and pastries at cheap prices, but also with the welcoming smile of her late husband Tarcisio in the first two decades, and later by the cordiality of his sons and daughters.
Maria inherited the art of confectionery from her parents, who at the time were one of the few confectioners in the Gozitan capital. Her bakery is a stone’s throw away from Portelli Confectionery. Passers-by along Archpriest Cassar Street could smell the aroma coming out of her bakery and, on entering, were struck by the cleanliness of the place.
Maria’s children have continued in the trade, carried on with so much dedication by their beloved mother. Like her, they will be a blessing to the city of Victoria.
Maria was, above all, a woman of faith, selfless and a warm person.
ABELA. On April 22, at her home in Sliema, ROBERTA, aged 56, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. She will be forever loved and cherished by her dear parents Rosette and Neville Abela, her beloved sister Sharon and her husband Damian Gatt, her treasured niece Michaela and nephew Gianluca, relatives and dear friends.
The funeral cortège leaves Mater Dei Hospital on Tuesday, April 25, at 10am for Tal-Ibraġ parish church, where Mass to celebrate her life will be held at 10.30am, followed by internment in the family grave at Santa Maria Addolorata cemetery.
As a symbol of Roberta’s vibrant spirit and love of life, we invite mourners to refrain from wearing black to the funeral service. No flowers by request but donations to the Malta Hospice Movement would be appreciated. Heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at the Renal Unit at Mater Dei Hospital, Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre and the Malta Hospice Movement.
Lord, grant her eternal rest. She worked very hard for all the family but never neglected their needs and brought up her children with so much care and dedication.
May the Risen Lord grant Maria eternal peace and consolation to her sons Frankie, Michael, George and her daughters Josephine and Miriam.
