GAMING IS AN MEDICAL CONDITION
GAMING ADDICTION IS REAL
The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that compulsive video game playing is now a mental health condition. According to its disease classification manual, the characteristics of gaming disorder are “very similar” to those of substance use and gambling disorders.
In a recent blog post, Dr. Vladimir Poznyak of the WHO’s Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse, says gaming behavior often “takes precedence over other activities to the extent that other activities are taken to the periphery… The other two characteristics are impaired control over gaming despite negative consequences such as disturbed sleep patterns, diet problems, and a deficiency in physical activity.”
According to the WHO, these behavioral patterns must be present for at least 12 months before a gaming disorder can be diagnosed.
