ESPÍRITU SANTO
Los tonos más profundos de azul comienzan a desvanecerse. Estamos en mar abierto, pero el tranquilo movimiento del Mar de Cortés hace creer que estamos navegando por un lago. Solo el aire salado delata la ilusión.
The deeper shades of blue begin to fade. We are at the open sea, but the calm movement of the Sea of Cortez makes me believe we are cruising through a lake. Only the salty air gives away the illusion.
De repente, podemos ver el fondo del océano. Una tortuga pasa nadando. Todavía estamos a cientos de metros de la costa, pero la luz se refleja en la arena blanca debajo de la superficie del agua, creando un brillo único.
El paisaje cambia en un instante. Imponentes rocas cortan bruscamente el agua, elevándose a 5, 10, 20 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Llegamos a la isla Espíritu Santo. Qué felicidad que Espíritu Santo haya sido declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco desde 2005 y sea Parque Nacional desde 2007. Significa que las generaciones venideras podrán disfrutar de su impresionante belleza escénica y, con suerte, nunca será cambiada por la mano humana.
Suddenly, we can see the ocean’s floor. A turtle swam by. We are still hundreds of meters away from the coast, but the light reflects on the white sand below the water surface, creating a unique glow.
The scenery changes in an instant. Imposing rocks cut sharply through the water, towering for 5, 10, 20 meters above sea level. We arrived at Espiritu Santo Island. I am happy that Espiritu Santo has been a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 2005 and a National Park since 2007. It means generations to come will be able to enjoy the impressive scenic beauty and it will hopefully never be changed by the human hand.
Although you can do different activities including kayaking, sport fishing, hiking on its trails, or stand-up paddleboarding, there are no permanent constructions or residents inside the island. We have the option to stay in one of its glamping camps, but we decide to only enjoy the day, swim, and relax in one of the open beaches and then return to our boat.
The National Park has more than 10 points to practice snorkeling or diving, either in its natural reefs or visiting the sunken boats in its surroundings. If you want a once-in-a-lifetime experience, you can even swim with sea lions at the largest reproductive colony in the Sea of Cortez. No matter where you turn while swimming, you will surely see a vast selection of marine animals here. Jacques Cousteau called this spot the “world’s aquarium” since it is among the five marine ecosystems with the highest productivity and biodiversity in the world.
The sun begins to set. The contrast between sea and desert, volcanic rock formations, numerous virgin beaches, as well as the great quantity of endemic flora and fauna is a breathtaking experience. We head back to La Paz while the shades of blue water turn deeper and get painted in the most beautiful orange light.
Si bien se puede realizar diferentes actividades como kayak, pesca deportiva, caminatas por sus senderos o paddleboard, no existen construcciones permanentes ni residentes dentro de la isla. Tenemos la opción de quedarnos en uno de sus campamentos de glamping, pero decidimos disfrutar solo del día, nadar y relajarnos en una de las playas abiertas para luego regresar a nuestro bote.
El Parque Nacional cuenta con más de 10 puntos donde practicar snorkel o buceo, ya sea entre sus arrecifes naturales o visitando las embarcaciones hundidas en sus alrededores. Para una experiencia única en la vida, se puede nadar con leones marinos en la colonia reproductiva más grande del Mar de Cortés. No importa a dónde mires mientras nadas, seguramente verás una amplia selección de animales marinos aquí. Jacques Cousteau llamó a este lugar el “acuario del mundo”, ya que se encuentra entre los cinco ecosistemas marinos con mayor productividad y biodiversidad del mundo.
El sol comienza a ponerse. El contraste entre mar y desierto, formaciones rocosas volcánicas, numerosas playas vírgenes, así como la gran cantidad de flora y fauna endémica es una experiencia impresionante. Regresamos a La Paz, mientras los tonos del agua azul se vuelven más profundos y se pintan con la luz naranja más hermosa.
