Unos veinte hipopótamos se acercan con inusual ligereza al vehículo. Rara vez se muestran ante los ojos curiosos que exploran la Pradera Africana. Excelencias espera, mientras los animales ocupan la carretera por donde debemos transitar. Pero ¿qué hace posible la buena salud de estos animales tan lejos de su habitad natural?
El ajetreo en las áreas administrativas advierte que el trabajo es intenso. Así lo confiesan los técnicos y profesionales dedicados al cuidado, estudio y reproducción de las especies. Mucho ha cambiado este lugar desde que en 2012 y 2013 llegaran más de 144 animales provenientes de Namibia. Desde entonces la empresa se ha convertido en la rectora de los zoológicos del país y atiende de manera integral a unas 12 instalaciones diseminadas por toda la Isla.
Según Jorge Rivero Domínguez, Director de la UEB Complejo Parque Zoológico Nacional, entre las labores más exitosas está la desarrollada por el Centro de cría. Allí se favorece la reproducción y la atención a los pequeños nacidos en cautiverio. Con esta labor también se garantiza la conservación de especies en peligro de extinción como el rinoceronte negro. La reproducción permite completar las colecciones que se exponen al público y así favorecer una mayor cultura ecológica y de respeto al medio ambiente entre la población.
Precisamente, la labor educativa es el objetivo de un amplio programa de interacción con miembros de la comunidad. Especialistas ofrecen talleres para niños con necesidades especiales y escuelas en general.
El intercambio con especialistas de otros países y la constante superación profesional son la base para proyectar nuevos espacios. Se pretende la construcción de una pradera euroasiática, que se sumará a áreas ya existentes como el aviario y el foso de los leones.

The breeding area rounds out the collections exhibited to the public and thus favors greater ecological and environmental awareness among the population.
Precisely, the educational work is the goal of an extensive program of interaction with members of the community. Specialists offer workshops for children with special needs and schools in general.
The exchange with specialists from other countries and the nonstop professional upgrade are the underpinnings for coming up with new spaces. The aim is to build an Eurasian Meadow, which will be added to existing exhibiting areas, such as the aviary and the lion's den.
