Rabies and FMD warnings issued

- By B.DULGUUN

The National Center for Zoonotic Diseases and Ulaanbaatar Health Department have reported that 22 rabid animal attacks have been recorded across Mongolia since January 1, and that an outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) is being responded to in Sukhbaatar Province.

The rabid animal attacks occurred in Khuvsgul, Uvs, Govi-Altai, Umnugovi, and Bulgan provinces, and in Ulaanbaatar’s Chingeltei, Bagakhangai, and KhanUul districts. According to reports, some residents of the 12th khoroo of Khan-Uul District contracted rabies after being exposed to the virus while skinning livestock killed by three rabid dogs on January 25. Reportedly, over 200 livestock were injured or killed in the attack.

Experts believe that the high population of stray dogs and cats has contributed to increased transmission of the infectious disease. People with pets that can transmit the virus are advised to keep up with vaccinations and to keep dogs chained or tethered, and to keep them muzzled on walks to ensure public safety.

Sukhbaatar Province began quarantine procedures on February 3, following reports of FMD outbreaks in Erdenetsagaan and Asgat soums.

FMD symptoms have also been reported in BaruunUrt and Sukhbaatar soums, and experts believe that FMD outbreaks are likely to become more widespread.

Officials are asking the public to call the following organizations if dead or rabid animals are encountered:
