Gashuun Sukhait Railway Company to be disbanded

Following deliberations during a March 20 meeting of Cabinet, Gashuun Sukhait Railway Company will be dissolved, with all administrative responsibility handed over to the Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi LLC Board of Directors.

Gashuun Sukhait Railway Company was a Chinese and Mongolian joint venture formed in 2014 to build the Gashuun Sukhait-Gantsmod narrow gauge railway. Even though the company finished assembling reports on the required railway technology, established a financing scheme, finalized designs, and completed geological and geo- detic explorations, Parliament’s 2014 state railway transport policy called for another 1.4 meters of railway to be built.

Cabinet's ministers will be responsible for having Gashuun Sukhait Railway Company's assets audited and assimilated by the TavantolgoiGashuun sukhait railway project, as well as repaying the company's foreign investors.

Government decree No. 268, issued in 2016, states that the Nariin Sukhait-Shiveekhuren railway be built during the first half of 2017. The 45.3 km Nariin Sukhait-Shiveekhuren railway and the 267 km Tavantolgoi-Gashuun Sukhait railway will be built under the same management.
