MONGOLIAN JUDOKAS CLAIM TWO MEDALS ON DAY 1 OF WORLD JUDO CHAMPIONSHIPS
Mongolian judokas have won silver and bronze medals on the first day of the 2017 World Judo Championships, which kicked off on August 28 in Budapest, Hungary.
State Honored Athlete M.Urantsetseg who competed in the women’s 48 kg event, won a silver medal. After having a bye in the first round, M.Urantsetseg beat her opponents from Romania, South Korea, France and Japan. In the finals, she was defeated by a former world junior champion Funa Tonaki of Japan.
Funa Tonaki swept aside M.Urantsetseg with ashi-waza with 25 second left. M.Urantsetseg previously earned gold and silver medals in 2014 and 2015 at the World Championships.
Mongolian-born judoka of Kazakhstan G.Otgontsetseg won a bronze medal in the women’s 48 kg contest. World number one G.Otgontsetseg defeated European Championships silver medalist Irina Dolgova of Russia to win her first World Championships medal.
State Honored Athlete and 2014 world champion G.Boldbaatar seized a bronze medal in the men’s 60 kg category. He advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating athletes from Turkey, France and Japan. In the quarterfinals, the Mongolia judoka lost to Diyorbek Urozboev of Uzbekistan. In the first bronze medal match, G.Boldbaatar beat judoka from the Czech Republic Pavel Petrikov by a waza-ari score.
