MONGOLIAN JUDOKAS CLAIM TWO MEDALS ON DAY 1 OF WORLD JUDO CHAMPIONSH­IPS

Mongolian judokas have won silver and bronze medals on the first day of the 2017 World Judo Championsh­ips, which kicked off on August 28 in Budapest, Hungary.

State Honored Athlete M.Urantsetse­g who competed in the women’s 48 kg event, won a silver medal. After having a bye in the first round, M.Urantsetse­g beat her opponents from Romania, South Korea, France and Japan. In the finals, she was defeated by a former world junior champion Funa Tonaki of Japan.

Funa Tonaki swept aside M.Urantsetse­g with ashi-waza with 25 second left. M.Urantsetse­g previously earned gold and silver medals in 2014 and 2015 at the World Championsh­ips.

Mongolian-born judoka of Kazakhstan G.Otgontsets­eg won a bronze medal in the women’s 48 kg contest. World number one G.Otgontsets­eg defeated European Championsh­ips silver medalist Irina Dolgova of Russia to win her first World Championsh­ips medal.

State Honored Athlete and 2014 world champion G.Boldbaatar seized a bronze medal in the men’s 60 kg category. He advanced to the quarterfin­als after defeating athletes from Turkey, France and Japan. In the quarterfin­als, the Mongolia judoka lost to Diyorbek Urozboev of Uzbekistan. In the first bronze medal match, G.Boldbaatar beat judoka from the Czech Republic Pavel Petrikov by a waza-ari score.

The UB Post will report on other Mongolian judokas competing in the 2017 World Judo Championsh­ips, set to conclude on September 3.
