NATIONAL TREE PLANTING DAY BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER

- By B.DULGUUN

The public joined this year’s National Tree Planting Day event to plant trees for better air quality and water supply, encourage everyone to take good care of trees and plants, and create better living conditions. National Tree Planting Day is observed twice a year in May and October in Mongolia to increase green facilities across the city, especially at the National Garden Park, which makes up 23 percent of the total green areas in Ulaanbaatar. This time, the observation was held under the slogan “Clean Air for Everyone – Water for Every Tree”.

On October 14, Ulaanbaatar residents and city officials cleaned the National Garden Park, watered more than 1,000 trees, and planted almost 600 saplings of aspen, sea buckthorn and maple in the park.

The results of a tree census conducted from August to September showed that there were 123,187 trees of 26 types at the National Garden Park as of September 2017.

To improve air quality and the environment, a total of 4,081 pine and spruce saplings were planted along 20 streets, 2,161 saplings on the road sides of Tavan Shar intersection, according to the Ulaanbaatar Mayor’s Office.

On the same day, President of Mongolia Kh.Battulga helped plant trees at School No.34 in Khan-Uul District, the school he graduated from. The school’s director, R.Ulziikhishig, expressed her appreciation of the President’s visit and promised to take good care of all trees and plants within the school ground.

President Kh.Battulga reminded students and teachers the importance of trees in eliminating desertification, reducing global warming, and improving the environment and people’s health. He said that around six million out of nine million trees planted since Mongolia started observing National Tree Planting Day in 2010 are growing well.

Nearly all planted coniferous tree saplings, measuring up to six meters in height, are growing well thanks to good and constant maintenance, said a city official.

It was reported that around 2,000 civil servants, company workers, and individuals planted over 9,400 saplings in Darkhan-Uul Province in an effort to create a greener environment. Provincial officials noted that increasing number of people are actively taking part in such events every passing year and thanked their hard work.
