E. Amartuvshin to perform in ‘La Traviata’
“A whore must always be a whore,” wrote Giuseppe Verdi, a furious response to the censors in Rome who had demanded changes to his opera “La traviata” to make the story of the courtesan Violetta more palatable to a conservative public, and a startling statement of his radical vision of his opera.
At the height of his self-confidence and compositional maturity in his 40th year, Verdi had turned away from biblical stories and historical dramas to confront his audiences with a drama that dealt with some of the great moral and social dilemmas of the 19th-century world: prostitution, disease, and human passion. Or as Verdi put it in his first title for the play, “Love and Death”.
First performed in Venice in 1853, “La Traviata” (The fallen woman) came to Ulaanbaatar in 1977.
The first female stage director, State Merited Cultural Figure Yo. Tserendolgor served as the artistic director; Ch. Jamsranjav as the conductor, and Ch. Gungaasukh as the art director of the “La Traviata” on April 9, 1977.
National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet of Mongolia is working hard to stage historical performances in its 55th season. One of the highlights of this month is “La Traviata” based on “La Dame aux camelias” by Alexandre Dumas.

The lead singer of the National Theater of Opera and Ballet and cultural envoy of Mongolia, E. Amartuvshin, will perform in the play, which will be performed for the 106th time in Mongolia. He signed a contract to sing as a soloist at the National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet with the new director, State Merited Artist Ts. Tuvshintugs, in February and it’ll be the first performance in the scope of this contract.

Mongolians are pleased by the good news that the famed singer was nominated for the Young Singer award of the International Opera Awards 2018, an annual awards ceremony honoring excellence in opera around the world. Moreover, E.Amartuvshin was awarded the Honorary Award of the BraVo International Professional Music Awards held at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow between March 10 and 11.
