- By B.CHINTUSHIG

The board of the National University of Mongolia has reached a decision to increase tuition fees by 19 to 24 percent depending on departments and schools.

Previously, the tuition costs of the university gradually decreased for students in higher classes. The most recent decision makes it so that the cost of tuition will gradually increase for students as they progress.

The cost of one credit at the Science School will range from 81,500 MNT to 100,700 MNT, a 24 percent increase. Meanwhile, the School of Business will see a 20 percent increase in its tuition, increasing the cost of one credit from 100,700 MNT to 120,800 MNT.

The board of the university said it will use the funds from the increase tuition payments to undertake several reforms at the university while also expanding the number and scope of programs aimed at supporting students.

Tuition costs at the university have consistently increased in the last several years, which has caused frustration amongst students and parents. The government hopes to alleviate financial issues preventing students from earning higher education degrees by expanding the student loan program.

A new procedure approved by Cabinet allows students to receive tuition loans without collateral or interest payments. Previously, student loans were conducted through commercial banks, which reportedly constrained the number of recipients of the loans.
