Athree-kilometer-long road was opened on Wednesday to mitigate traffic around Zuun Ail and Sansar areas by providing access to Dari-Ekh through Bayanzurkh District’s 5 and 22nd khoroos and Monel.

The new road measures seven meters in width and has two lanes on either side of the road to boost traffic flow as well as dams to prevent flooding. With the new road, travel to Gants Khudag and Tsagaan Davaa areas from Dari-Ekh will become faster and more comfortably, according to city officials who attended the opening ceremony.

Mayor of Ulaanbaatar S.Batbold, his deputy P.Bayarkhuu, Member of Parliament B.Saranchimeg, Head of the Ulaanbaatar Road Development Office J.Togtokhbayar, and Director of Ulaanbaatar Road Repair and Maintenance Agency J.Chinzorig attended the ceremony along with local residents.

In his opening remarks, Mayor S.Batbold said that he was impressed with the fast progress he is seeing in city development projects.

“City development projects went into construction in February. The first road completed this year was put into operation in May. In the past, road construction works were completed in September or October when it was already snowing. Taking advantage of the warm weather, we’re striving to carry out development projects as fast as possible by announcing tenders in February, reviewing (applications) in April, and aiming to complete constructions of main roads and buildings before the National Naadam Festival,” he said.

The new 3 km road was built by the Ulaanbaatar Road Repair and Maintenance Agency on the Ulaanbaatar Road Development Office’s order.

Road from Dari-Ekh intersection to Gants Mod and Tsagaan Davaa experience the heaviest traffic in the

outer ring road in Ulaanbaatar. Currently, most drivers use the main road to travel from northwest of the city to northeast, but enhancing the outer ring road is expected to reduce traffic along this route.

“Whether the three km road will be able to become fully operational will depend on the bridge we’re building

over Selbe River. The construction work of the bridge has technically finished. The land acquisition for the area connecting Khailaast with Dari Ekh is progressing slowly, but it will be vacated before the National Naadam Festival,” the mayor stated.

The Ulaanbaatar Mayor’s Office has assigned a working group to build an underground path under the railway track that allows large vehicles to pass through in an effort to lessen traffic. According to Mayor S.Batbold, it’s possible to build underground paths in 13 sections of the railway, but for starters, construction work for three or four paths will be started in fall this year.
