Local elections held in 29 soums
As 22 representatives of local councils died, one committed a crime, six were appointed to other state positions, and three resigned at their own request, elections took place in 29 soums of 11 provinces last Sunday to elect new representatives for the open seats.
According to the Law on Elections, elections to replace local representatives take place in late June or early October each year, and other dates are unsuitable for hosting an election, which is why the local elections took place on June 24.
Some 83 candidates representing the Mongolian People’s Party, Democratic Party and Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party run for 32 seats available at local citizen’s representative councils, and their election campaigns were carried out from June 6 to 23.
Some 23,477 voters were able to participate in the local elections, but voter turnout was low, with 17 polling stations not meeting the required 50 percent turnout.
The General Election Commission decided to host additional polls in the 17 polling stations this Saturday to increase turnout.
Only voters who did not participate in the June 24 elections will be able to vote on Saturday. Last Sunday’s votes will be added to the results collected from the upcoming poll.
In accordance to the law, the election commissions of soums present their citizen’s representative councils with the official election results within five days of the elections, and the citizen’s representative councils make election results public within seven days of the results submitted to them by election commissions.
