Arabid horse attacked a sixyear-old boy, a cow, a horse, and three dogs on Saturday morning in Tuul Town in 13th khoroo of Khan-Uul District.

According the victim’s mother, E.Buyan-Ulzii, a horse crossing its back two feet reached her livestock after tripping several times on the way and attacked a herd, leaving some injured. She said that her dog chased after the rabid horse to protect the other livestock and her son ran after the dog. However, while the boy was running after the dog, the horse changed course and attacked the boy. Reportedly, the rabid horse bit the six-year-old’s calf and then kicked him in the head.

The boy’s skull fractured and had to get seven stitches, according to E.Buyan-Ulzii.

“The horse’s mouth looked like it was filled with blood. After some time, a vet from Tuda Veterinary and an animal specialist from the local animals department came and assumed that the horse had been affected with rabies based on the symptoms. We were unable to capture the horse until a swineherd who lives nearby came to help. Men from the National Emergency Management Agency came soon after but left after ensuring our safety,” she said.

It was reported that the rabid horse died on Monday, July 30. Specialists took samples from the horse to run necessary tests. The horse’s carcass will be incinerated once the results are out and animals bitten by the horse will also be exterminated, reported emergency workers.

E.Buyan-Ulzii stated, “As far as we know, three dogs, a horse and a cow were bitten by the horse. I was told that the bitten dogs will be put down, but the horse and cow were vaccinated against rabies. My son was administered with a vaccine too. Apparently, once you’re bitten, you have to get a shot against rabies immediately after getting bitten, and on the third and seventh day. It’s recommended to get vaccines again two and three weeks later.”

The mother was displeased with the local veterinary department’s response time. She said, “I don’t understand why experts from the local department didn’t find out about that rabid horse earlier. Why didn’t they run the tests before the horse died? I have a lot of complaints about this recent incident.”

Authorities haven’t determined the owner of the rabid horse yet.
