Neonatal intensive care unit doubles capacity
The National Center for Maternal and Child Health (NCMCH) has expanded its pediatric surgery ward with necessary repairs through the third phase of Save Life Project.
Save Life Project, initiated by JCI Mongolia, completed the expansion with approximately 120 million MNT. For the first phase of the project, JCI Mongolia conducted comprehensive repairs for NCMCH’s neonatal intensive care unit and equipped it with essential equipment in 2015. In the next phase, the company donated a full set of equipment required for neonatal and infant surgeries, providing NCMCH the opportunity to open a special surgery room for infant surgery.
General Director of NCMCH Sh. Enkhtur commented, “We have been working with JCI Mongolia NGO for three years. In the third year, a major project was carried out, giving us a pediatric surgery and intensive care unit. Our hospital has 44 units, all of which are one-of-a-kind in the country. We’re now able to provide early diagnosis, surgery and treatment with advanced technologies. However, the hospital conditions aren’t that great.”
“Particularly after surgery, children must be treated in an environment with highly strict hygiene and sanitary regime. Unfortunately, we’re unable to conduct maintenance work at units to this extent due to insufficient funds.”
Sh. Enkhtur thanked JCI Mongolia’s assistance and underlined that the new expansion will make a huge contribution to improving healthcare services for infants and children.
Reportedly, over 1,000 children are admitted to NCMCH each year to receive treatment at the neonatal intensive care unit. In the past, the unit was able to admit six children but with the expansion, their work capacity has doubled. It is now operating with 12 beds.
