DP demands premier to disband Cabinet

- By T.BAYARBAT

Chairman of DP S.Erdene noted that if Erdenet Mining Corporation’s accounts are frozen overseas under a decision from the London Court of International Arbitration, Mongolia might face an economic decline as the country loses profits from Erdenet’s copper trade.

The Democratic Party (DP) caucus met on Monday to discuss recent issues, and after the meeting, the caucus held a press conference.

DP Caucus chairman D.Erdenebat said, “Last week, as government officials drunk in office at a ministry, they fought each other and a state servant was murdered, which is a terrible tragedy, and as a railway track was seriously damaged, a number of people were injured and the country experience large losses. Few days ago, foreign agents tried to kidnap a person residing in Mongolia legally, which is a serious violation of the country’s independence and sovereignty, and the country lost its appeal to the London Court of International Arbitration regarding the arbitration against the Standard Bank of South Africa, which is causing Erdenet Mining Corporation to freeze its accounts overseas, and these facts are showing how the government is performing.”

D.Erdenebat noted that as DP believes that the government which was formed by selling government positions put Mongolia’s state into chaos and crisis, and U.Khurelsukh’s Cabinet is unable to keep upholding its tenure right, hence the party demands U.Khurelsukh to disband his Cabinet quickly to take accountability for recent events.

During the meeting, lawmaker J.Batzandan emphasized that Prime Minister U.Khurelsukh and Minister of Justice and Internal Affairs Ts.Nyamdorj vowed that after coming into office, they will address controversial issues regarding the 49 and 51 percent stakes of Erdenet Mining Corporation, but they could not make a progress in the issue for 10 months, which illustrates that current Cabinet ministers are not capable of dealing with challenges facing Mongolians, so Parliament should seek Cabinet resignation as soon as possible.

Chairman of DP S.Erdene noted that if Erdenet Mining Corporation’s accounts are frozen overseas under a decision from the London Court of International Arbitration, Mongolia might face an economic decline as the country loses profits from Erdenet’s copper trade.

S.Erdene said that the government is claiming that the country’s economy is growing, but people are not benefiting from the economic growth and they are still facing poverty and unemployment, and the government has not reduced the nation’s external debts.

He added that many children’s rights were violated throughout this summer and several children have died in accidents, but the government is not making a serious attempt for improving the quality of care for children and protecting their rights, which is one example of the poor performance of U.Khurelsukh’s Cabinet, so the party caucus is demanding the prime minister to dismantle the Cabinet altogether.

D.Erdenebat stressed that the government is taking out a lot of loans from foreign countries through the International Monetary Fund, but they are not spending these loans for the country’s development and groups within the Mongolian People’s Party are spending the loans improperly to gain power over each other.
