4 large bridges to open by 2020

- By B.DULGUUN

Both bridges will have four lanes, will be 250 meters in length, and have three times higher traffic capacity. Making the twin bridges operational is expected to reduce traffic in Yarmag by up to 60 percent.

Four main bridges in Ulaanbaatar are being rebuilt through Chinese concessional loans.

Beijing Uni-Construction Group Mongolia Co., Ltd. is constructing the Bayanzurkh Bridge. The construction work started in May this year.

The bridge is planned to be 321 meters long with a width of 22.6 meters. It will reportedly have four lanes with pedestrian paths on both sides. The construction work is progressing at 24.7 percent completion. Beijing Uni-Construction Group Mongolia hopes to complete 60 percent of the construction work by November in order to meet its deadline in November 2019.

While visiting the site on August 13, Mayor of Ulaanbaatar S.Batbold ordered construction workers to make sure to build a high quality bridge by the deadline.

LAND ISSUES HINDER CONSTRUCTION OF OVERPASS

An overpass is being built over the intersection of the Traffic Police Department. The Ulaanbaatar Mayor’s Office reported that the construction work has been slowing down due to issues with the land acquisition. Hence, the mayor ordered the Ulaanbaatar Land Office to resolve the problem as soon as possible.

The project is worth a total of 42.38 million USD and is scheduled to commission next year. The project implementers plan to complete the construction of the main bridge structure before November when cold seasons begin.

YARMAG TWIN BRIDGE TO OPEN IN NOVEMBER

The construction of twin bridges in Yarmag has been going according to plan. Repairs for the

old Yarmag Bridge was completed earlier this year and one lane of the bridge was opened prior to Naadam festival.

Both bridges will have four lanes, be 250 meters in length, and have three times higher traffic capacity. Making the twin bridges operational is expected to reduce traffic in Yarmag by up to 60 percent. The Ulaanbaatar Mayor’s Office guaranteed that the twin bridges will be in good shape for 50 to 60 years after its commission.

The project leader assured that it will strive to commission the second bridge by the end of fall with lighting, drainage system, and bicycle lane.

FLOODS DELAY SONSGOLON BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION

Sonsgolon Bridge in Khan-Uul District is also being renewed by Beijing Uni-Construction Group. Its construction has progressed to 30 percent completion, which is slower than expected.

Beijing Uni-Construction Group explained that their construction work hasn’t advanced much in recent days due to regular downpours. The new bridge is planned for commission right before next year’s Naadam festival.

After visiting the four construction sites, Mayor S.Batbold commented, “We hope to complete the construction of these four major bridges by 2020. The first bridge will become operational in November. Everything is going according to plan. The construction of the overpass near the Traffic Police Department is quite delayed because numerous unexpected issues have been coming up, including heating systems, transmission lines and etc. However, the implementer is working to catch up with the plans.”

Most bridges in Mongolia were built in the 1960 and their renewal was imperative, the mayor underlined. The Ulaanbaatar Mayor’s Office shared plans to rebuild Zaisan Bridge once constructions of these four bridges are finished.
