Tips for taxi services

- By B.DULGUUN

There are numerous taxi service companies you can choose from in Mongolia but we recommend that you catch one of the unofficial taxis available anywhere in the city. All you have to do is raise your hand. This is a much faster way to reach your destination, especially when you’re in a hurry, not to mention you will not be asked to pay the 1,000 MNT charged by taxi companies as waiting time fee.

However, it’s best to call a taxi service in the evening just to be on the safe side. When you call a taxi service (with phone numbers that begin with 1900), you will be charged 500 MNT per minute regardless of which mobile operator you’re signed with.

There may be language barriers when communicating with the taxi driver so you may want to mark your destination on a piece of paper or show it on a map or smartphone.

USEFUL APP

Taxis usually charge 800 MNT per kilometer during the day but the rate increases

by 200 MNT at night. To keep track of how many kilometers you travel and avoid being overcharged, we recommend that you download a smartphone application called Taxidyoo. It’s a simple app that counts the meters you travel based on your GPS.

Another useful app is UBCab which allows you to book taxi services online. This way, you will not have to go through the trouble of explaining where you want to go directly to the driver.
