Medegma Dandaron, who is a wellknown artist in Russia and France, has come to Mongolia to showcase her “Road to Alaya Vidjana” exhibition dedicated for the 100th birthday of her late father.

Dandaron’s father, Bidia Dandaron, was a prominent Buryat Buddhist figure of the Soviet period, a famous Buddhologist and recognized as a reincarnation of Jayagsy Gegen, and the former Khamba Lama of Kumbum Monastery in Tibet. He is known for his neo-Buddhism, a teaching in which he tried to combine Eastern philosophy with modern European science.

Like in all of her previous exhibitions, artist Megdegmaa released oil paintings and tapestries with unique patterns and texture for her latest solo exhibition. These original tapestries were not only knitted but also created with the combination of acrylic paint to accentuate the colors, which is not a traditional way of creating tapestry and her way to incorporate her individuality. The unequal surface of this textile art allows people living with visual impairment or blindness feel and enjoy art in their own way.

Artist Medegma Dandaron combined oil and acrylic paints to pop up the colors, giving a vibrant touch to her artworks. Like her father who explored modernity, she created impeccable artworks by mixing up traditional art techniques with modern ones. Her art demonstrates her process of seeking new information from her surrounding and developing them into inspirations and ideas.

The exhibition was named “Road to Alaya Vidjana” to inspire people to reach Alaya Vidjana, which her father believed was a force that directed people’s hearts and mind, and stimulated changes to their body. Reaching Alaya Vidjana is said to open the path to Nirvana.

“Road to Alaya Vidjana” will be open through October 25 at Fine Arts Zanabazar Museum.
