Discounted nighttime tariffs comes into effect
A total of 135,000 households will be eligible for discounted nighttime tariffs that began on November 1. The measure was introduced in 2016 as part of the effort to reduce air pollution. Households included in the program will become exempt from the nighttime electricity night tariff.
Continuing until April 1, the program will include 120,000 households in Ulaanbaatar and 15,000 households in province centers and soums around the country. The Energy Regulatory Commission approved the “Providing electricity discounts to households in ger districts” procedure in regards to the program.
Households in Ulaanbaatar will be offered a 100 percent discount on nighttime electricity tariffs while rural households will be provided with a 50 percent discount. The tariff discount will apply from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. every day.
The new system is an antiair pollution intervention that aims to reduce the use of coalburning for heating.
The Ulaanbaatar Electricity Distribution Network Company reminded households eligible for the discount to pay late bills before November 1 to ensure eligibility. One of the requirements for getting the electricity discount is “not to have late bills before applying for nighttime tariff discount”, as specified in Article 3.5 in the Regulation to Providing Electricity Tariff Discount to Ger Area Households.
Experts advised consumers to ensure they have a standard electricity meter, certified radiators and heaters, and to follow safety rules for fire hazards.
