- By T.BAYARBAT

On the occasion of the anniversary of the birth of Chinggis Khaan, the president awards the Order of Chinggis Khaan, the supreme order of Mongolia, to a person who has made great contributions to Mongolia’s independence and socio-economic development.

N.Bagabandi, the second president of Mongolia, put forward a proposal to create the order to Parliament in 2002, and as Parliament accepted N.Bagabandi’s initiative, 11 Mongolians were awarded the prestigious order since 2005.

Under Parliament’s resolution on the Order of Chinggis Khaan, a Mongolian citizen can receive the order for his or her work in strengthening the nation’s independence and sovereignty, upholding human rights and freedom, justice, and unity of the nation, passing on the valuable aspects of the nation’s history and culture to new generations, and making great achievements in the development of Mongolia’s people, politics, society, or economy.

According the resolution, the order can be awarded to a foreign citizen for his or her work in strengthening Mongolia’s unity, prosperity, and development, making great contribution to the relations and cooperation between Mongolia and other countries, promoting Mongolia abroad, and development of Mongolia’s economy and society.

Order of Chinggis Khaan has been awarded to the following people:

1. First President of Mongolia P.Ochirbat in 2005 2. Composer B.Sharav in 2006 3. Former Prime Minister D.Byambasuren in 2009 4. Former Speaker of Parliament R.Gonchigdorj in 2010 5. Second President N.Bagabandi in 2011

6. Former Speaker of Parliament D.Demberel in 2012 7. Former Prime Minister D.Sodnom in 2013

8. Physicist Kh.Namsrai in 2014 9. Writer G.Mend-Oyo in 2015 10. Opera singer G.Ariunbaatar in 2016

11. Olympic champion in judo N.Tuvshinbayar in 2017

Local media outlets reported that the President’s Office announced the Order of Chinggis Khaan will not be awarded this year, but the office did not clarify why President Kh.Battulga decided not to grant the prize this year.

The public criticized former President Ts.Elbegdorj for presenting eight laureates with the order over his eight years in office, which is said to have devalued the order’s reputation.

People believe that this supreme order should not be awarded every year and say that this order should be awarded once every three or four years.
