A“Let’s Walk 10,000 Steps a Day” health event was held on Sunday to endorse healthier lifestyle and keep the public active.

Taking part in the event, Minister of Health D.Sarangerel, WHO Representative in Mongolia Dr. Sergey Diorditsa, State Secretary of the Ministry of Health E.Sodnomjamts and other officials walked over 10,000 steps at Baruun Shireet Am of Bogd Khaan Mountain with members of Ulaanbaatar Travelers and Altain Ives clubs.

Organizers came up with the number 10,000 based on academic works of Japanese researcher Dr. Yoshiro Hatano, who first studied the benefits of walking 10,000 steps, or approximately five miles, a day in 1960. Many researchers from all over the world tested this idea and concluded that this was a form of moderate intensity activity that helps achieve the “greatest health benefits”, as mentioned by Professor Rob Copeland from Sheffield Hallam University.

Participants highlighted that people need to take the initiative on their own accord and take action to take better care of their health rather than relying on the ministry, hospitals and health specialists.

Minister D.Sarangerel commended, “Lately, I see more people going on hikes at Bogd Khaan Mountain. This has made a positive influence on others and is making it easier for the ministry to reach people and encourage them to adopt a healthier lifestyle through our initiatives.”

She expressed support to public initiatives and campaigns for better health, lifestyle and prevention of diseases.

WHO Representative Diorditsa noted that Mongolia made an accurate decision of including the improvement of the quality of and access to health care services as one of its Sustainable Development Vision 2030. He advised directing focal points of projects and programs on not only health care services but also disease prevention and awareness raising measures.
