Deputy Prime Minister U.Khurelsukh held a meeting with Russian delegates led by President of the Russian Railways Oleg Valentinovich Belozyorov on Friday at the State Palace to discuss issues surrounding railway cooperation.

The Russian Railways is a Russian fully state-owned vertically integrated company, both managing infrastructure and operating freight and passenger train services.

The deputy prime minister pointed out that the two countries should keep focusing on cooperation in the railway sector in all levels, and the beneficial and productive work of Ulaanbaatar Railway, a Russian-Mongolian joint venture, is an example of mutual efforts.

He stated that the government of Russia and the Russian Railways are concentrating on the development of Ulaanbaatar Railway.

U.Enkhtuvshin noted that cooperation in the railway sector is always discussed during meetings between the heads of the two countries’ states and governments, of the Mongolia-Russia intergovernmental commission and the trilateral cooperation, and the two countries’ presidents discussed the development of the bilateral railway cooperation at the Eastern Economic Forum held in Vladivostok, Russia, in September and 2018 Council of the Heads of State Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization held in June in China.

During their meeting, the sides underlined that Ulaanbaatar Railways transported a total of 23 million tons of freight in 2017, which was a record number of freight in the history of Ulaanbaatar Railways’ transportation.

They noted that if Ulaanbaatar Railways carries out the scheduled plan from 2019 to 2020, the capacity of transit transport will increase by 28 percent by 2020.
