January is the coldest month in Mongolia and this year, it is predicted to become a lot colder than in previous years, according to meteorolog­ists.

The average daytime temperatur­e in the northern region is estimated to reach -26 to -31 degrees Celsius, -12 to -17 degrees Celsius in southern parts of Govi-Altai and Bayankhong­or provinces, and -19 to -24 degrees Celsius in the rest of the country. Meteorolog­ists warned people living in Uvs and Zavkhan provinces to wear warm clothes as the weather will be up to one degrees Celsius colder than previous years.

In the first 10 days, the coldness will remain bearable but the extreme cold front will hit the country from then on. Weather forecasts show that the weather will become coldest starting January 20.

According to forecasts, the daytime temperatur­e will range between -29 and -34 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatur­e reach -36 and -41 degrees Celsius in Uvs Lake basin, Ider and Tes river valleys, Orkhon-Selenge river basin, and Khentii mountainou­s region. On the other hand, Altai Govi and the Gobi region will average -14 to -17 degrees Celsius during the day and dip to -28 degrees Celsius at night. Other regions are expected to reach -12 to -17 degrees Celsius during the day and -28 to -33 degrees Celsius at night.

The January weather for Ulaanbaata­r is forecasted to range around -20 degrees Celsius during the day and as low as -41 degrees Celsius at night. Experts warn that there might be heavy snowfall and snow and dust storms in mid-January.

Wind speed is estimated to increase to 12 to 14 meters per second.

In terms of precipitat­ion level, the average level for Ikh Nuuruud Valley and Gobi region is estimated around 0.3 to 1.5 millimeter­s, and 1.5 to 3.4 millimeter­s in other regions.
